Dates happen:20/12/2010 ... 27/02/2011Exhibition «Domestic Scene _ NIKI KANAGINI» December, 20 2010 – February, 20 2011 Exhibition Space: C.A.C.T. at Warehouse Β1, Thessaloniki Port Opening: Monday, December 20, 2010, 19:30 a.m.
The State Museum of Contemporary Art presents the exhibition “Domestic Scene-NIKI KANAGINI”, from December 20, 2010 to February 20, 2011. To the extent that, on March 2008, the artist herself had originally conceived and designed this exhibition which was necessarily postponed due to her sudden death, the curators have tried to respect her ideas and intentions as far as possible.
Niki Kanagini (1933-2008), a polymorphous artist and thinker, was representative of a generation of restless and dynamic artists; furthermore, she kept up a strong exhibition presence in Greece and worldwide. Her artistic creations are characterized by a continuous development and originality: starting from painting with a tendency towards abstract expressionism, she has soon turned to other forms of expression within space, oriented by the approach of conceptual art and the appropriation of technology: installations, actions, photography, video. Without rashly yielding to fashionable artistic trends, Kanagini proceeded carefully, beginning with theoretical surveys and analytical elaborations before moving to synthesis.
Her strong commitment to the theoretical framework of contemporary artistic creation have been proved by her participation in the organization of conferences, such as the symposium on the foundation of a Museum of Contemporary Art in Greece (1977), the conference on Modern Art and Tradition (1981), the symposium on “From Sensation to Sentiment” (1999), the conference on “Religiosity and Art” (2001).
Even if Niki Kanagini was not an engaged feminist, her societal considerations and her personal experiences pushed her in techniques and topics related to the exploration of gender identity.
The exhibition “Domestic Scene – NIKI KANAGINI” not only explores one more aspect of the female creativity: it also illuminates the thoughts and concerns as well as the expressive attempts of contemporary Greek artists.
The exhibition will be completed by the following related events: - Saturday, January 29, 2011: Conference on Niki Kanagini - Saturday, February 19, 2011: Conference on “Spaces of Femininity – Towards a new mapping”.
The exhibition will be accompanied by the publication of a catalogue; additionally guided tours and educational programmes for all the levels of education will be available.
